Abodu Junior ADU Conversion: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide
If your Abodu unit needs a junior ADU conversion and the original hardware is failing, we stock the compatible components and install them across Los Angeles. A typical Abodu-compatible JADU conversion hardware swap runs $450 – $1,150 installed, depending on which piece failed and how much of the rough opening needs rework. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a door that no longer latches square, a header that’s settled past tolerance, or hardware that’s corroded from the marine layer working its way inland off the 405.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with Abodu directly. That means we carry parts that match their specs and we install them by the book, but we don’t answer to their warranty department. We answer to you and to the Los Angeles building code.
Which Abodu Models This Applies To

Abodu’s junior ADU line shares a common set of structural hardware across their Studio, One Bedroom, and Two Bedroom models, but the conversion kit differs by year. Units built before 2022 use a 2-3/8″ rough opening for the interior connection door with a steel header plate that’s bolted, not welded. Newer units switched to a 2-1/2″ opening with a welded plate and a different hinge pattern. If you’re holding a tape measure, measure the rough opening width, not the door slab. That number tells us more than the model name.
The OEM hardware Abodu spec’d is fine steel, but it’s not magical. A quality aftermarket replacement from a supplier like Baldwin or Schlage often outlasts the original, and it’s what we stock on the truck for same-day swaps. One gotcha specific to Abodu: the striker plate on pre-2022 units sits 1/8″ proud of the jamb. If you install a standard plate without shimming, the door will catch every time. We shim it as a matter of course. That’s the kind of detail that separates a clean swap from one that binds again in six months.
Signs Your Abodu Junior ADU Conversion Is Failing
- The door drags or catches at the top corner. The header has settled or the rough opening wasn’t shimmed properly during the original install. This gets worse in Los Angeles’s clay soil, which expands and contracts through wet winters and dry summers.
- The latch doesn’t engage without lifting the handle. The striker plate has drifted out of alignment, usually because the jamb screw holes have wallowed out from repeated use. It’s a twenty-minute fix with the right plate.
- Visible corrosion on the hinges or hardware. If you’re within five miles of the coast, the salt air in Santa Monica, Venice, or Playa del Rey accelerates rust on uncoated steel. We swap to marine-grade hardware in those zones.
- Gaps at the top or side of the door that widen and narrow with the seasons. This is the framing responding to moisture. It’s normal to a point, but a gap over 1/4″ means the opening needs re-shimming before the hardware fails outright.
- The door self-closes or self-opens. The jamb is out of plumb. It’s a visual annoyance now, but it’s wearing the hinges unevenly and will kill the latch eventually.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s the honest math for Los Angeles, stated plainly:
- Hardware-only swap (hinges, striker, latch): $450 – $700 installed. This covers parts, shimming the opening back to plumb, and testing the swing until it’s right.
- Header plate replacement (pre-2022 bolted style): $700 – $950 installed. We pull the old plate, check the king studs for crush, and re-secure with structural screws rated for shear. Permit not required for a like-for-like swap.
- Full rough opening repair (settled framing, rotted sill): $950 – $1,150 installed. This is the one where the original build was done fast and the framing is now paying for it. We replace what’s bad, not the whole wall.
The price we put in writing before we start is the price on the final invoice. No change orders, no “discovered conditions” upcharge. We hand you a line-item quote, you approve it, we do the work. And The Garrison Standard covers everything we install for 365 days. If the door binds or the latch fails inside that year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the straight answer. You can check the hinge screws with a screwdriver and tighten what’s loose. That’s safe and it costs you nothing. But if the jamb is out of plumb, the header’s settled, or the rough opening needs shimming, you’re into territory where a homeowner mistake compounds fast. A door that isn’t hung plumb eats its own hardware. You’ll replace hinges, then the striker, then the latch, and the problem was the framing the whole time.
We’re not going to tell you this is rocket science. It isn’t. But it does require a level, a plumb bob, and the patience to shim an opening until it’s square to the sixteenth. Most homeowners don’t have the third one. Call us at (361) 315-4177 and we’ll come look at it. The estimate is free, and Reed Calloway will tell you if it’s a hardware swap or a framing repair before you spend a dollar.
FAQs

Original Abodu hardware lasts 7 – 10 years in most Los Angeles neighborhoods, but coastal homes in Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey, and Playa del Rey should expect 5 – 6 years from uncoated steel before corrosion sets in. Marine-grade replacements typically double that. Call (361) 315-4177 and we’ll tell you which zone you’re in and what that means for your hardware.
Latch alignment and loose hinges can be repaired. A wallowed-out striker plate, a bent hinge, or a settled header cannot be reliably repaired, and pretending otherwise just means you’ll be back here in six months. We’ll tell you which one you have. Estimates are free at (361) 315-4177.
A hardware-only swap takes one to two hours on site once we have the right parts. A header plate replacement or rough opening repair takes half a day. We don’t ask you to take a full day off work for something that takes ninety minutes.
Yes. We keep hinges, striker plates, latches, and header plates for both pre-2022 and post-2022 Abodu units on the truck, along with the same hardware styles for Cover and Dvele units. If we don’t have the exact piece, we source it same-day from our Los Angeles suppliers.
